5th Class News
We have had a fantastic last term in 5th Class.
In February we were lucky enough to be involved in the Longford Lights Festival in Connolly Barracks. Two artists came to our school to help us make paper boats. Every boy got to design their own boat with their name on it. These were then lit up with different colours and displayed along with boats from boys and girls from other schools around the county. The finished piece was really fantastic and the whole lights festival was an amazing experience for all the people of Longford. We were all so proud to be a part of it!
Just before the Easter holidays we were very lucky to be chosen to take part in this year’s St Patricks Day parade. The theme of the parade was “Amuigh Faoin Speir” and we spent the weeks before the parade getting ourselves ready. We eventually won the prize for the best school float in the parade. Well done to all the boys and teachers involved!
In geography we learned about Europe and capital cities in Europe and completed projects on some cities around Europe. This was fantastic as we have many boys from different countries and cultures in 5th class. In history we focused on World War 1 and The French Revolution which the boys loved.
We have talked a lot about looking after ourselves and we decided we would focus on getting everyone to have a healthy lifestyle from now on. We focused on 4 things: healthy eating, exercise, sleep and having fun. This included lots of advice on what to eat and when to eat. All the teachers have really seen an improvement in the boys fitness and we hope they continue their healthy habits at home over the summer.
At the end of May we had a fantastic day out at Lets Go in Athlone College. All the 5th classes went on the tour together and we were split into two mixed groups. It was great to get to play with the boys from the other classes as well as our own. The boys got to do 10 different exciting activities throughout the day which included zorbing, interactive games, a climbing wall and bouncing castle games and slides. We had a fantastic school tour and it was brilliant to have a well-deserved day out together after all our hard work all year. We also have a trip planned to Corlea bog before the year ends.
In the run up to the Summer break we have been writing about summer holidays, making the most of the nice weather when the sun shines and getting outside for PE, trips to the Mall or planting in the garden with Ms. McGinnity. The boys have been enjoying Wellness walks organised by Ms Barrins, with workouts by Mr. O’Brien and Mr Delaney. 5th class are really a super group of boys in every way, and we can’t wait to see what amazing things they will do next year when they step up to 6th class.
A busy year so far!
The Primary School Curriculum is followed in both our 5th classes, with each student receiving a broad education.
All children are always encouraged to do their best and reach their potential. A particular emphasis is placed on showing the children how we are all different and that everyone has their own unique skills and talents.
All children are proficient in using technology. We do a large number of group and project work across all areas of the Curriculum. This learning promotes teamwork, IT efficiency and presentation skills.
Sport is an integral part of 5th class. Lots of the boys have represented the school in Cumann na mBunscol football this year and are out training most days of the week. They also play lots of different games in PE each week.
Music is very important in 5th class where the boys in one class are learning the tin whistle and the boys in the other are learning to rap.
We are also entering the ESB Science Blast day in the RDS. We recently attended a day in Drumlish in association with this which was amazing.
The boys have also done a cooking day with Tesco which they responded brilliantly too and showcased other skills which we might not see in the classroom.
We will be involved in the cycle right programme later in the year provided by the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Authority. This gives the boys a great chanced to learn how to safely cycle to and from school.
We have just finished 6 weeks swimming too where the boys all passed their tests and will move to the next group in 6th class.
