2nd Class News
It has been a very busy term for the 2nd class boys. The boys were busy learning about the seasons, life cycles of different animals, different Irish myths and legends and lots more.
We were learning all about water safety in April and May while we were learning to swim and I hope all the boys remember the important rules especially coming into summer holidays.
The boys have been learning how to write and follow procedures. They had great fun making their own smoothies, Rice Krispy buns and pizza in class. It was great to see boys trying new things.
The boys in Ms. Fox’s class were busy caring for their tomato plants and sweet pea plants which are growing in the classroom windows. Ms. Maher’s boys are caring for lettuce they have growing in their classroom.
Ms. Fox’s boys are working hard on a project called “Picker Pals”. They have been chosen with other schools in Ireland. They are picking up litter around the school. They are learning about the importance of collecting litter for our environment. They have monthly zoom meetings with other schools around Ireland and the Picker Pal organiser’s to discuss how they are getting on with their litter picking challenges.
Ms Maher’s class are keen sportsmen, their favourite PE classes include Tag Rugby, Dodgeball, Rounders and Athletics. Every boy has excelled in at least one of the sports we did.
Mr. Keenan’s class were very interested in the Solar System. They spent a lot of time learning about the moon landing and all of the planets there are. They also researched planets together and painted them. Check out the website to see the results! The boys in Mr. Keenan’s class are also growing tomatoes and are very proud of how they are growing.
We would like to say huge congratulations to the boys who made their First Confession and First Holy Communion this year. We would also like to thank the parents who helped their sons at home to prepare for the day with learning prayers and readings.
We also had a fantastic day out in Turoe Pet Farm, Loughrea. We fed the animals, played in the activity centre, on the astro turf, outside in the playground and bounced on the largest indoor bouncy castle in Europe. Everyone was so well behaved and a pleasure to bring on tour.
We had a great day in the Mall for our sports day. We played a selection of games, football, rounders, basketball and running activities. Thanks to Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Kenny for organising it for us.
We wish all of you a fantastic summer holiday wherever you may be. Thank you all for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you all in September. We wish our students the very best of luck in 3rd class. Happy Holidays!!

Seaside & Beach Summer Art
The boys have been busy learning about the season of Summer. Our pupils explored the beauty of the seaside through colourful artwork inspired by beaches, boats and lighthouses. Using colour, creativity and imagination, they captured sunny shores and sailing boats which helped show the brightness of Summer.

Obstacles Courses
Both Mr. Keenan and Ms. Fox’s classes had a busy few weeks enjoying obstacle courses in PE. The boys engaged in activities such as ring throwing, hurdle jumping, Hop Scotch and balancing beam bags and more. The boys developed lots of new skills while having great fun together.

Communion Party
The boys in Mr. Keenans class had a party to celebrate making their First Holy Communion. There was cake, ice-cream and lots more treats. Congratulations to all of the 2nd Class pupils who made their First Holy Communion.

The Solar System
The boys in Mr. Keenan’s class were learning all about the Solar System. We learned about every planet and had great fun learning lots of different facts about them. We then designed and painted all of the planets in our Solar System.

2nd class enter a massive science competition
On Wednesday February 25th second class travelled by bus to Ballinamore, County Leitrim to compete against 50 schools in ‘Stemtacular’. The boys worked for months measuring and recording rainfall, designing and building cars, making bridges, making water filters, building dioramas and much more. In addition to skills in science the boys had to practice their public speaking. Adults from many businesses and universities were going to be judging them and asking them questions, a very nerving situation for 7 and 8 year old boys.
The boys had to hit the ground running as the judges started interviewing them as soon as we landed. The teachers could no longer help but they were so proud of how all boys spoke.
After judging we were allowed into a tent with fantastic displays including VRs, snakes, puzzles and robots. This was followed by a brilliant magic show. Then it was time for judging, this was a long process and the boys were both patient and anxious. There were a few awards and we could see that we were competing with many from 6th class. We couldn’t believe it when one of our groups won an award!
The teachers in St Michael’s are incredibly proud of every pupil in 2nd class. They have shown a great interest in science and engineering. They showed great teamwork throughout the process and great bravery when speaking to the judges.
Well done 2nd class
Our Senses
In science this month Ms. Fox’s boys were exploring their five senses – sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. We learned how each sense helps us understand the world around us. We created Mr. Potato heads to represent our five senses.

The boys in Ms. Fox’s Class are participating in the Picker Pals programme which is a free environmental education program for primary schools that involves children leading their families, school and communities on local litter-picking adventures. Picker Pals motivates children through a fun song and story world, and the unique Picker Pack, equipment and inspiring children on local litter-picking adventures. Each day, two student gets to use the Picker Pal equipment to clean up around our school. When they return we discuss what they found and how we can reduce litter around our school.
