Ms. Sheridan, Ms. Lennon and Ms. Heavey 4th Class News
4th class have had a busy but brilliant year. We had 6 weeks of swimming and it was great to see the progress the boys made and some boys are now swimming in the deep end!
We had an amazing ‘Wellness Week’ in February. We were so lucky to have pancake Tuesday fall in Wellness Week and thanks to Mrs. Sorohan, who made sure there were delicious pancakes for everyone. The boys really loved the pancakes and were also shown how to measure ingredients by Mrs. Sorohan. We went all out for odd sock day during Wellness Week and the boys really got into the spirit of things with lots of colourful odd socks! We had a fantastic time in the mall where the boys tried out lots of new exercises and games thanks to Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Kenny. Mrs. Sorohan also did some yoga with the boys for Wellness Week. To top it all off, an ice-cream van visited the school on Friday. Thanks to Ms. Barrins for organising all the fun activities- we all have great memories from that week!
Ms Heavey’s fourth class were very lucky to complete a life-skills programme this term. Thanks to Helen, the instructor, who spoke to us during this ten week course.
Ms Sheridan’s class took part in a drama project which was organised by the Backstage Theatre. A team of writers worked with the boys for two days and gathered ideas. These ideas were then combined with work from two other schools to create a puppet drama. We saw part of the competed project in the Backstage Theatre in April and are hoping to see the finished product in the future.
Seachtain na Gaeilge was in March. Ms Lennon’s and Ms Sheridan’s classes took part in a Tráth na gCeist (table quiz) in the library. The boys showed very impressive Gaeilge skills and won lots of fabulous prizes too.
The boys have been playing Gaelic football this year and some of the boys from 4th class are on the Gaelic team who made it to the final this year in Pearse Park. Thank you to Mr. Carberry, Mr. O’ Brien and Mr. Delaney, who are helping the boys improve their skills.
It was also great to see so many of the boys do so well in athletics this year. They are a talented bunch and some of the boys were selected to represent the school in the Athletics Meet in Tullamore.
We are lucky to be playing lots of tag rugby this term also - the boys are really enjoying it and it’s a great way to get out and have fun with all of the other classes too.
4th class are great readers and regularly visit the local library. Ms Heavey’s class recently completed the novel Wonder, which was excellent and all of the boys loved watching the film too! The other classes read “Under the Hawthorn Tree”.
We have really enjoyed our science and STEM activities in fourth this year. We have been busy constructing and programming Lego designs with the We-Do Lego. Fourth class took part in an art workshop organised by Cruinniú na nÓg. We made sculptures with tinfoil and paints, created clay sculptures and we all got to take part in a special effects makeup class to make fake scars and wounds.
In history, we have recently been looking at The Famine and The Normans. We researched and completed projects on The Famine. We were very lucky to go on a tour with Mrs. Sorohan where we explored some local history that was linked with our studies A big thank you to Mrs. Sorohan who worked closely with all of the boys in fourth this year.
We had a brilliant day out at The Shannon River Adventure Centre for our school tour. We enjoyed some kayaking, canoeing, pier-diving a mud slide and someland-based activities, such as archery and wall-climbing. It was a great day out. As the school year is nearly over, we are really excited for a fun few weeks in fourth! We will have a sports day to look forward to and hopefully lots of sunshine for outdoor activities! The boys have done really well this year and their teachers wish them well for 5th class.

ATHLETICS ATHLONE 2017
One day Brendan Doyle came to our school and he told us about athletics and he taught us athletics. Mr. Gannon needed to pick the best athletes in 3rd and 4th. Mr Gannon picked Sebastian, Kacper, Michael, Divine, Joseph, Goodness, Pauls and Kristaps. We had to go to Moyne with 5th class and 6th class we had 2 relay races and 2 track races. We ran as fast as we could. When we came back we were exhausted. After 3 days we got the results and we came first but unhappily 5th and 6th class came 4th in Moyne. We needed 4 more players to enter the Athlone All-IRELAND ATHLETICS so Mr Gannon picked Amyan, Emmanuel, David and Alex to go to Athlone with us. Every day we trained as hard as we could. We got fit and strong. So it was the final day. We had to go to Athlone. Everybody got on the bus at Lidl and was ready to go. Mr Gannon picked what people would do the track races and relay races. The first race was the 4x50m obstacle race. Emmanuel, Michael, Divine and I were picked for the race. We ran as fast as we could and tried as hard as we could. We came 1st in the race. We won 4 races from the field section. We did the Javelin, Standing Jump and Triple Jump. We also did the 1kg Chest Push and the Standing Jump.
We finished all our races and took some photos of all the team. We came back to Longford. We were that tired, that we nearly passed out!!! We had to wait 5 days to get the results. We came 5th in the ALL IRELAND ATHLETICS. We were really surprised that we came 5th in the country in the All Ireland athletics. We thought that we would come 7th. Everybody was really surprised and our Principal said we had a homework pass and she promised us a surprise from her………Kacper…..
ATHLETICS ATHLONE 2017
One day Brendan Doyle came to our school to tell us about athletics. We had never heard of athletics before! He told us the more we trained the better we would be so we trained non-stop. Mr. Gannon was picking the best athletes in 3rd and 4th class. Mr. Gannon had picked the teams. He had picked Michael, Kacper, Sebastian, Divine Goodness, Joseph, John, Pauls and Kristaps. We went to Moyne. We were with 5th class and 6th class. We ran as fast as we could and we tried our very best. We went back home after everyone was finished their race. After a few days we got the results and we came first but our fifth and sixth class came 3rd.
We needed new players if we were going to win the All-Ireland. The new players we got were David, Amyan, Alex and Emmanuel. We went to Athlone and we ran like we never ran before. This was one of the hardest things I ever did in my life! Alex and David did the 120m relay. They were running for their lives and they came first. We would always cheer for each other. Michael, Kacper, Emannuel and Divine did the obstacle relay. We won 3 track events and lost 2 and came second in another. Mr. Gannon took lots of photos and we had fun. We brought food and drinks and then we did the field events. We came 2nd in chest push and 3rd in speed bounce. We did one of the best in all of Ireland. We all had a blast and hoped that training on all our breaks was worth it. We came back to Longford on the bus. Michael and Kacper sat in front with the girls. We tried talking to them but they ignored us!!! We just started eating on the bus. When we got back to the school we told Miss Horan that we did great and that we tried our best. Then she gave us free homework passes. We waited 5 days and we got the results and we came 5th in the country….That was one of the most coolest days of my life ever….Michael
Super work on the video and editing Shane Crossan. The kids were delighted with it. Thanks to Mona and Ursula in Backstage for the costumes and Denise and Kathleen for all their help. Well done boys. Great work.

Our Fieldtrip - The Camlin River
Today I went on a trip to see where the Camlin River starts and where it flows into the Shannon. It was a very fun trip. We got to go to different areas to see the Camlin River. It rises near Granard and flows through Ballinalee and Longford town before it splits into the River Shannon. We took a bus.We learned about tributaries. Tributaries are small rivers that join up with a big river to widen it. The source of the Camlin is a small well that cows sometimes drink from. As we were travelling, we stopped at the places we could see the Camlin from the road. The Camlin got bigger and bigger. We also saw it meandering through the countryside. We saw a small waterfall as well. We saw river banks and river beds. Where do fish store their money? The river bank! We found the end of the Camlin in Tarmonbarry where it spilled into the Shannon. We also got to skim pebbles at the edge of the Shannon. By Lolu |
